      LT COL (R) SYED ISMAIL once served in the Malaysian Armed Forces. He read law at the MARA University of Technology in 1985 and was a pupil in the chambers of Messr Abu Talib Shahrom & Zahari, Kuala Lumpur. He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1995. Whilst in government service, he has held various legal post and last held the post of Head of Military Legal Department, Malaysian Armed Forces. He also holds a graduate Diploma in Shariah Law & Legal Practice from the Islamic International University Malaysia and a graduate Diploma in Strategic & Defence Studies from the University of Malaya.
LT COL (R) SYED ISMAIL commenced legal practice with Messrs Abdul Raman Saad & Associates in the field of criminal defence practice (defence), civil litigation in all courts (including the industrial court) and shariah legal practice. He is also a courts-martial advocate and provide defence work in the Malaysian courts-martial. He also handles all aspects of general, commercial and banking litigation (including execution proceedings). He is also a practicing peguam syarie for the States of Wilayah Persekutuan, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka and the State of Johor.
LT COL (R) SYED ISMAIL enjoys writing legal essays in his spare times some of which have been published in the Malayan Law Journal as follows:-
